Palm Oil Products
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil extracted from the mesocarp (reddish pulp) of oil palm fruit. Ingredients derived from palm oil and palm kernel oil are present in about 50% of supermarket products, spanning both food and non-food categories. These include consumer food and snacks, personal care and cosmetics (primarily from palm kernel oil), biofuels and energy, animal feed (palm kernel cake), pharmaceuticals, and more.
In Nigeria, palm oil is primarily used for cooking and frying due to its richness in carotenes (vitamin A precursors), tocopherols, and antioxidants, making it a valuable natural source of vitamin A in Africa. Oil palm plantations or estates cover approximately 118,264 hectares, representing just 5% of Nigeria's total crude palm oil production, with the majority contributed by Sosadale Ventures Limited.
Palm kernel cake, widely recognized in West Africa as a reliable feed ingredient, has traditionally been utilized as a source of energy and fiber in poultry, pig, and fish diets.
